For those who don’t know, long boarding is an up and coming
form of transportation. In large numbers across the country college students
are using their long board to cruise from class to class, get to meetings or
work, go downtown for recreation, and get exercise. A long board is simply a
skateboard, usually with bigger wheels (made for going fast), and a longer
deck. People see it as dangerous to the rider and the pedestrians around the
rider because the lack of breaks, but any experienced long boarder will tell
you using you foot to drag on the pavement is practically just as effective.
One of the most important factors when discussing long boarding as a form of
transportation is the accessibility of it. With a bike you have to find a place
to lock your bike, and then you have to lock it. If you bring your bike on the
bus you have to spend time getting the bus driver to unlock the rack and you
risk making yourself or other riders late. With a long board you simply put it
on the ground and go. When you reach your destination you can pick it up and
bring it with you. When I long board to class I bring my board straight into
class with me, just as many of my peers do. While it may not be the most
practical form of transportation, when simply getting around is what you need
to do, long boarding is a fun way to accomplishing that, with the added bonus
of getting exercise.
